Wildlife advocacy about NQ Wildlife

Wildlife care rescue plays a pivotal role in advocating for Australia’s unique wildlife. With a myriad of endemic species facing threats, rescue efforts ensure the survival of vulnerable animals. By providing immediate care to injured or orphaned wildlife, NQ Wildlife Care contributes to the preservation of Australia’s distinctive biodiversity. These initiatives not only address individual cases but also highlight the broader conservation challenges, fostering public awareness and support. Through rescue, rehabilitation, and release we embody a commitment to safeguarding the intrinsic value of Australia’s fauna, promoting ecological balance, and preserving the natural heritage for generations to come.

Our Mission

“To rehabilitate sick, injured and orphaned wildlife from rescue to release.”

NQ Wildlife Care Inc is a voluntary non-profit organisation that helps native wildlife in North Queensland. We rescue and provide care for sick, injured, and orphaned native wildlife until they are rehabilitated and can be released back into the wild. We care for around 3000 native animals a year, including bandicoots, bettongs, birds, echidnas, flying foxes, frogs, gliders, goannas, kangaroos, koalas, lizards, microbats, native mice, possums, quolls, snakes, turtles and wallabies. Volunteers care for animals in their own time, in their own homes and at their own expense. Our network of carers extends from Townsville to Ingham, the Burdekin, Charters Towers and all the way to Mount Isa. We are grateful to the local vets in the region who help us by treating injured wildlife.

Helping our carers

NQ Wildlife offers discounts on animal care products to our members, including the wambaroo milk formulas.  We hold regular training events for potential, new and experienced carers throughout the year. We aim to continuously develop carers’ skills and to raise public awareness of the wild animals found around us, their needs, the dangers they face and what can be done to protect them.

We receive no government funding. To support our members and our various activities, we conduct a variety of fundraising events and always welcome donations and sponsorships. Every bit helps! Our dream is to establish a dedicated wildlife hospital and rehabilitation centre, a dream that will require a fair bit of additional fundraising…

Our History

NQ Wildlife was established in Townsville in 1989 by a group of committed carers and incorporated in 1990. The initial objective of the founding members was to provide a support platform to the few wildlife carers residing in the area. The organisation has grown significantly since and now has approximately 350 members. In 2008 we established our Wildlife Centre with the aid of a number of substantial grants and a lot of hard work and dedication from volunteers. The Centre is used for training and meetings throughout the year and is staffed by volunteers every Sunday.

We acknowledge Jim and Eleanor Pollock’s enormous contribution to the running of NQWC over the years and their ongoing support.
